Great Skyway Recreation advertisement that has one of the most kick ass Bob Haro pictures. I wanted all three of these bikes in that ad. Not to mention the green cables and blue Dia-Compe brake set up like Bob had.

BMX Action -- November 1983

And another kick ass cover from BMX Action. Like seeing freestyle taking a cover shot considering how heavy this issue is with race coverage. And even that is fine by me, I like the fact that this is also a cruiser heavy issue.

Great coverage form the NBL War Of The Stars race in Conroe, Texas. The picture of Rob Fehd flying over a set of doubles is such a nice shot. This also happens to be the track that the McDonalds BMX commercial was filmed at.

Scott Clark leading the Pro cruiser class. Nice to see so much 24" race coverage. Pretty surprising to see the Gatorade sports bottle getting a nod though. I am guess sports bottles weren't the rage yet. Wait. Were they ever the rage?

There is one thing that is a guaranty with these older issues of BMX Action, Mike Buff would have some kind of stylish shot. And this opening spread to the CW racing 24" Pro Racer is another fine example of that. Airing it out over the Trick Team quarter pipe.

Bicycle Motocross Action--November 1981

Great cover shot of Harry Leary blasting into a berm slide. Was 1981 Harry's best year as a Pro? Not sure, he seemed to be everywhere, and didn't seem like he was leaving anytime soon.

  

When cruisers were starting to catch on more, companies started releasing more and more to fit the demand. Funny to see some of the earlier models with their laid back geometry and tall stand over heights. It was a great starting

point for a great class of BMX bikes though. 

Jumping into bushes. Young Eddy King winning 14x. Stu Thompson sharping his pedals. And the Rupe boys tearing it up. nice group of photos for the Pittsburgh race.

Very fun looking track layout. I like all the bumps and ruts coming in and out of the turns. Lots of slipped pedals. Those fools weren't clipped in. Need to look and see who took number one that year. Close points race. 

There is so many rad things about this photo. Not just the speed these guys are doing, the era perfect BMX items. More than one rider with front brakes. Campy hubs. Riders still running those Tech I levers. Great year for BMX.

BMX Action -- September 1982 -- Part 1

Another Monday, and another magazine throwback. This issue had so much good content in it, that I will be doing this post in two parts. Hell, I might make it three. We will see. And there you have the rad cover of Toby Henderson shredding on his Hutch 24".

Murray sponsored the Knoxville race and dropped an impressive(for 1982) 18 grand in prize money on the Pros. Still, it seemed the World's Fair that was going on at the same time kept quite a few people from attending the race.

Great shots of Stu Thompson and Bubba Hayes. And you know when it rains at a Murray sponsored race and you have to remove a layer of mud from the track, they are going to have Murray lawnmowers there to help out. GO BRIGGS AND STRATTON!

RL and Buff performing their first show at the Knoxville race. Rad seeing those guys blast off the back of their kick turn ramp. I was always a little afraid to do that when I was younger and opted out by flying off the side of the ramp.

Jeff Bottema blasting his cruiser out of one of the many cool test places. This guy is a true legend of BMX and will be known for more than just his forks. Love that little bit about him almost stepping on a rattlesnake. Scare the crap out of anyone.

Ted Emmer and His Twenty Four

Ted Emmer hitting Del Mar on his cruiser. Taken from the first issue of Freestylin' magazine. He was rocking those 71 spoke Z-Wheels. Not having 72 had something to do not being able to put one at the valve stem hole. Great picture.

BMX Action--December 1981

One of my favorite BMX Action covers ever. Jeff Bottema at full speed bun buzzer on his new factory ride for Team Murray. This is such a good issue that I am going to have to break it down into two post. Also having a 132 pages makes it hard to fit into one post.

Powerlite was always known for all of their strange bends in their tubing. This 24" was no exception. One of the nicer looking cruiser at the time, it sure had a great parts spec also. Then there is that bend in the top tube. Sure made it stand out from all of the other cruisers.

Woody Itson showing that he can do more than ride flatland. Epic skate park shot of Woody in the Cloverleaf bowl. And a great strobe studio shot of Dave Marietti. These magazines were one of the reasons I got into photography. So many rad photos.

RL Osborn and Mike Buff taking a hack "full-toot" through a berm at Ascot. So rad seeing these guys ride one of these with just a coaster brake. I sure bet that was fun.

BMX Action -- July 1983

Toby Henderson out front of the cruiser class of the Memphis NBL Wars of the Stars race. Always good to see the cruiser class making the cover.

I remember this race coverage and seem to wonder how big of a race this must have been to be getting almost ten pages of coverage. Such good race coverage at the time. I think at this point is where I became more aware of brands and who was my favorite was.

Nice photo of Bubba Hayes power out of one the turns that the Memphis track had. If you look at the layout of the track, that is about all it had.

Great photo of Greg Hill looking BEAT after a tough semi. And another really cool one of  6 year old Willie Huebner and his dad walking off the track after his sew up rolled off the rim. Classic Bob Osborn. Also take note of the tracks layout. At least it had "The World's Biggest Berm."

I just had to post this for two reason. First, the rock walk is the first trick I ever leaned. An second, every time I see that classic Taco Bell sign, I just have to eat there. Damn you Buff!

This issue has a great interview withe Brent and Brian Patterson. Lots of excellent photos in there. this two page shot is fitting for the era and is still a true BMX classic.

It will not come to anyone who follows this Blog  surprise that I quite enjoy a good berm shot photo. This one of RL tearing into a berm, grip down  is so good. I used to have a hard telling RL and Buff apart in some of the bike test in BMX Action. You have to look at the patches on their jerseys to figure out who is who.

Custom GT Team Cruiser

Spotted this up over at Vintage BMX. Very nice custom build from Knight Bike Co.

NAHBS for 2011.

A while back I posted something about the NAHBS  (North American Hand Made Bike Show) that happened in February. Well it turns out that the guys at Least Most have a really cool post showing a bunch of cool photos from the show. Go over there and check it out. I really like this 24" cruiser that Kish Bikes built. That is a Ti frame under that orange paint.

The show will be held next year in Austin. Glad to have spotted this today. February 25-27, 2011. Here is their link. http://transition.handmadebicycleshow.com/home/ Looks like they are updating at the moment. Still some good info for now.
