BMX Plus February 1983

There have been so many memorable magazine covers from the likes of BMX Plus and BMX Action, but there was always one from BMX Plus that stood out to me. And remembering the first time seeing this as a twelve-year-old at my friend Adam's house. WOW! Bob Haro, playing peek-a-boo on that chrome Haro Master, riding in some futuristic world, this cover was it!  And at the time when Star Wars Return of The Jedi were coming out with other 1983 classics like War Games and Krull, this was the perfect cover for the time. And forget about all of us needing those Graphite Skyway Tuff Wheels after seeing those gold hubs!

It was always nice to see a little more freestyle making it to the pages of magazines during this time. I can still remember trying these bar hops in our gravel driveway out in the country. Hahaha! And I'm still looking through a few old boxes of stuff hoping to find my copy of Bob Haro's Freestyle Moves book. But it looks like that might be lost along with all of those copies of that Atari Video games.

Now, there is so much to unpack here. When I was doing these post regularly, I would not normally do a post of three pictures from a "bike test", but this one was too good to pass up. And as a huge bike and automotive nerd, the history of the Steyr-Daimler-Puch brand is something that is an all-day research fest and a possible call to one James May from The Grand Tour.

Now mixed into all of the "rich" Daimler-Puch" history, there was an agreement with a New Jersey frame builder named Speed Unlimited. These American produced frames to the naked eye look to be just a normal run of frames from this era of BMX, but upon closer look, they have a list of amazing frame building features. Ovalized top and down tubes, gussets at the seat and chain stays, plate gussets with logo embossed into them, and tubular brake mounts. Nicely produced frames, and I would love to see one of these in person.

Upside Down Ones And Graphite Wheels

The undeniable perfection of this picture from a time when GT Bikes and The King Eddie Fiola where on top of the BMX world. Many an old school BMX bike collector would love to get their hands on that chrome Performer that Eddie is riding there and add it to their stable of bikes.

Dave Vanderspek Over Christian Hosoi -- Venice Beach AFA Contest

A reminder of how good Vanderspek was. Here is Vander over Hasoi during the Venice Beach AFA contest. I am still trying to figure out what issue of Freestylin' this is from. I am thinking the November 1985 issue, if anyone can verify that for me?

Skyway Advertisment--BMX Action January 1984

Great Skyway Recreation advertisement that has one of the most kick ass Bob Haro pictures. I wanted all three of these bikes in that ad. Not to mention the green cables and blue Dia-Compe brake set up like Bob had.

Skyway Spinmaster

Not sure how this came up the other night, and why on earth we were talking about some of the worst "detanglers" made in BMX history. Having owned most of the early models that were made, the Spinmaster by Skyway was one of the worst. Only lasted about a month before I bent the sleeve that the stem went through. I guess I am glad I never had the Spin Tech by SAKAE detangler though. Those were the worst.

Super BMX -- February 1982

Not a lot of history with me and Super BMX. I used to ride something like 8 miles to our local Lone Star Ice House to play Galaga and read magazines in the summer. This was about all they carried in the way of BMX magazines and I always remember being somewhat turned off by these. Never seemed to have the best content, with the exception of a good photo here and there. This issue isn't much different. Not very good at all, but had some good San Antonio race coverage in it.

With a title like Silverdome Colossus you might expect a little better coverage. But that was not the case, soft black and white photos, poor out of focus color photos, eh, left me wanting more.

This is way before my time in BMX racing. Does anyone remember this race? Did anyone actually make it to the race to watch of even compete? Would like some feed back on it.

One nice thing I did like about a few of these issues was their race coverage of racers other than experts and Pros. Good to see some of the local boys getting coverage back then.

That team picture of the Lighting Express Team brings to mind a sponsorship deal something along the lines of Chico's Bail Bonds from The Bad News Bears. Are there any teams these days that have sponsors that are not bike related? Just wondering.

One really good thing about this issue is the article where they pay a visit to the Huffy factory in Ohio. Really neat seeing how these lower end bikes were being put together, something like two million bikes a year. Wondered what year they decided to out source everything to China?

Hugo Ramp to Ramp Transfer

Dale Matson posted a bunch of really good pictures on his Facebook page, and I think most of them can also be found over on his Blog http://midwestfreestyle.weebly.com/index.html Really awesome stuff over there. Somewhere on there is a kick ass picture of Hoffman blasting over Moliterno. So rad.

Craig Campbell

I have had such a good response after posting that wall ride photo of Craig Campbell, I went and tracked(borrowed) down some more photos of him. Anyone have the AFA footage of him at the Austin Masters Comp? I wouldn't mind getting that posted.

Freestylin' -- December 1988

One of the more memorable covers from the 1988 era of Freestylin'. Has to be one of the better issues also. Such great tour coverage and way too much talk about hair extensions. I wonder how many yahoos went out and got extensions after seeing RL with them? Great shot of Martin by Bob Stukey.

Mr. Moliterno with a perfect look back on the table on contents page. Freestylin' seemed to be picking up a bunch of skate companies for advertisers. I didn't really care. I thought some of the coverage they did was pretty cool and for the most part I enjoyed skating. I just couldn't skate. "Does this sore look infected?" Not sure Santa Cruz. But your ad sure does.

Another RL interview. Things were definitely changing. And old El Cid was right in the middle of it all. This was about the time of Hammer(not the MC), and crazy shin pad/knee pad combos. I think every rider at one time had a set of those pads. I know I had a couple of sets. I wonder if they are they still around today?

Lots of good tour coverage in this issue. That picture of John Peterson riding those quarter walls is so amazing. I wanted to search those things out and and ride them for days. Heard they were a big time bust though. And what can I say about Craig Campbell? That guy is amazing. So much control on vert. Always fun to watch him ride. Skyway had quite the team at the time.

And you know Skyway had to bring along a portable wall for Eddie Roman to ride. Here Craig Campbell takes a ride on it while some other guys spin around on the ground. I think they go by the name Plywood Hoods. I think they are pretty good or something. Kevin Jones is a God among men.
