Woody Itson And The Gold Trick Star

Wedge ramp no handed stall by the one and only Woody Itson. The stories surrounding that gold Hutch Trick Star frame are aplenty. One was that is was stolen somewhere in New York and then eventually return to Woody years later. Another one was something about Mike D. melting the bike down in order to make a set of new wheels for his mini truck. Who knows? Who knows?

October Is Here -- BMX Action October 1983

The year seems to be flying by, so here is the first post for October.Sometime ago, January 28, 2010 to be exact, I listed this issue's cover as one of my top favorites. And that still hold trues. Amazing shot of Rich Sigur on the cover.

And I had to include this photo of Richie Anderson and Charlie Williams racing the 16-17x cruiser class. The caption of the photo mentioned Return Of The Jedi and the speeder chase on Endor. When Star Wars crosses over to BMX, AWESOME!

Freestylin' -- May 1985

Nice cover with Woody Itson pulling a one-footed flipper somewhere on a brick kick turn ramp. The turned slide on the cover seems to have popped up a few times in Wizard's history. This one of Eddie Fiola being one of my favorites. And also is seems Rippin' might have a little history with Wizard Publications also.

Last month I posted this sick picture of Dave Vanderspek from the Joe's II contest. Good to go back and revisit this issue. That ramp looked so perfect and the guys were killing it. A two page spread of Fiola doing a feeler air? Keep reading on to the next section to see.......

.......the picture I would have liked to see in that two page spread. Hugo Gonzales with a kick ass one footed look back. Hugo was always trying cool stuff at contest, and look back variations are something that was not being done at the time. Also nice to see Joe the owner of the ramp getting some love. Nice hand plant shot. Is that even what that trick is called? Excuse my lack of skating knowledge. Where is Animal Chin anyway?

Online over at Facetube there is footage of this show in France with RL Osborn and Eddie Fiola. I still find it crazy that these guys used to kill it on such narrow ramps. Oh the good old days.

Also good to get Mike Dominquez coverage after getting better from a broken leg.  Dude was always going way high and had the best variations. One-hander, one-footer while teammate Woody Itson looks on. Also you have Ron Wilkerson laying a little hip hanger in downtown San Francisco.

BMX Action -- September 1982 -- Part 1

Another Monday, and another magazine throwback. This issue had so much good content in it, that I will be doing this post in two parts. Hell, I might make it three. We will see. And there you have the rad cover of Toby Henderson shredding on his Hutch 24".

Murray sponsored the Knoxville race and dropped an impressive(for 1982) 18 grand in prize money on the Pros. Still, it seemed the World's Fair that was going on at the same time kept quite a few people from attending the race.

Great shots of Stu Thompson and Bubba Hayes. And you know when it rains at a Murray sponsored race and you have to remove a layer of mud from the track, they are going to have Murray lawnmowers there to help out. GO BRIGGS AND STRATTON!

RL and Buff performing their first show at the Knoxville race. Rad seeing those guys blast off the back of their kick turn ramp. I was always a little afraid to do that when I was younger and opted out by flying off the side of the ramp.

Jeff Bottema blasting his cruiser out of one of the many cool test places. This guy is a true legend of BMX and will be known for more than just his forks. Love that little bit about him almost stepping on a rattlesnake. Scare the crap out of anyone.

Crazy cool to see Timmy Judge doing a little flatland. The ramp stuff at the end of part two is great. Wonder why they didn't use the quarter pipe? Where the heck was Buff?

BMX Action--August 1983

This issue has to be one of those issues that stands out the most to me. And it all has to do with The Pit and a certain Hutch Pro Star test. You will see that in a minute.

Given their normally epic race coverage, it is a good thing to have a pictorial to cover a race every once on a while. Seeing as how good of a photographer Bob Osborn is, this is a welcome site.

Concrete jumps and berms must have been a must have for track in Florida. That and carpets on the top of jumps at the trails. Or is that everywhere now?

I know a lot of people have the "tuck" associated with Greg Hill, and I somewhat agree. But this picture of RL blasting one out of The Pit is by far one of the best ever captured. And still, to this day, on of my favorite tings to do on a bike.

Another great shot of Buff proving he has hops. And Toby Henderson sliding sideways "goin' wide open."

Pro gate starts always attracted a large crowd. Bid time speed of the line here. Damn! these shots make me want to go to the track .

(*update 9-4-2013* That is not Gary Ellis, It's Troy Daniels. Sorry.) This issue had a lot of great cruiser coverage. Does anyone know what forks Gary Ellis is running on his bike? Was it some kind of Kastan design dropout or a Kuwahara thing?

BMX Action April 1985

Since April is still here for a few days, I decided to post up some stuff from BMX Action April 1985. Cover boy was Tony Murray doing a sick one footed table more than likely on that blue Haro quarter pipe on the back or their trailer. Those were always the best shows. Always heard stories of Tony crashing full speed into that ramp when the lower section was flipped up. Probably just false rumors from the road.

Then you have an article that should have read "Pure Platinum."  If these guys would have had any idea what kinda of prices some of this old Hutch stuff would be getting now-a-days, they would be loaded. Also, how could you not love Mike Miranda's style.

 

Monday Magazine throwback.

When I was a wee little lad growing up out in the middle of nowhere, I would pace back and forth at the front door looking at the mail box seeing if we had gotten any mail yet. I even resorted to leaving the door of our mailbox open so that when the mailman came and closed the door, I knew it was time. That mail was my lifeline to the outside world of BMX. Getting a new magazine was one of the best things. I would read and study these magazines, every single word and picture. Good times. Here are a few more of my favorite pictures.

July 1981 Bicycle Motocross Action. Before they switched over to BMX Action. So many things about this picture. Front brake and a coaster. No rear caliper. Crazy kinked quarter pipe. So good.

January 1984 BMX Plus Mike Dominquez cover. I remember looking at this cover so much and wondering what the hell kinda of brake pads was he running, and where on Earth did he get a set of white Skyway Tuff Wheels. Also that I needed to get one of those Hadley bottom brackets for my bike.

January 1985 BMX Plus, Woody Itson.Never really thought of Mr. Itson as much of a ramp rider. Most of what I had seen in the magazines was of him riding flatland. So seeing him doing a look back on that sick chrome Trick Star. WOW! I got on my bike and rode to the closest ditch and tried to learn these things. And what about that crazy SST hub? How many of those were produced?
