BMX Plus February 1983

There have been so many memorable magazine covers from the likes of BMX Plus and BMX Action, but there was always one from BMX Plus that stood out to me. And remembering the first time seeing this as a twelve-year-old at my friend Adam's house. WOW! Bob Haro, playing peek-a-boo on that chrome Haro Master, riding in some futuristic world, this cover was it!  And at the time when Star Wars Return of The Jedi were coming out with other 1983 classics like War Games and Krull, this was the perfect cover for the time. And forget about all of us needing those Graphite Skyway Tuff Wheels after seeing those gold hubs!

It was always nice to see a little more freestyle making it to the pages of magazines during this time. I can still remember trying these bar hops in our gravel driveway out in the country. Hahaha! And I'm still looking through a few old boxes of stuff hoping to find my copy of Bob Haro's Freestyle Moves book. But it looks like that might be lost along with all of those copies of that Atari Video games.

Now, there is so much to unpack here. When I was doing these post regularly, I would not normally do a post of three pictures from a "bike test", but this one was too good to pass up. And as a huge bike and automotive nerd, the history of the Steyr-Daimler-Puch brand is something that is an all-day research fest and a possible call to one James May from The Grand Tour.

Now mixed into all of the "rich" Daimler-Puch" history, there was an agreement with a New Jersey frame builder named Speed Unlimited. These American produced frames to the naked eye look to be just a normal run of frames from this era of BMX, but upon closer look, they have a list of amazing frame building features. Ovalized top and down tubes, gussets at the seat and chain stays, plate gussets with logo embossed into them, and tubular brake mounts. Nicely produced frames, and I would love to see one of these in person.

Nelson Canada and D.D. Leona battling it out in a tough 17x main from the Huffy/ABA Grand Nationals. Looks like D.D. Leona took the win, and a very fast Steve Veltman took the Amateur and Cruiser Titles.

October Is Here -- BMX Action October 1983

The year seems to be flying by, so here is the first post for October.Sometime ago, January 28, 2010 to be exact, I listed this issue's cover as one of my top favorites. And that still hold trues. Amazing shot of Rich Sigur on the cover.

And I had to include this photo of Richie Anderson and Charlie Williams racing the 16-17x cruiser class. The caption of the photo mentioned Return Of The Jedi and the speeder chase on Endor. When Star Wars crosses over to BMX, AWESOME!

Bicycle Motocross Action--February 1980

Stanley Robinson and Brent Patterson in the lead at the DG/ABA Grand National in Las Vegas, Nevada. Cool to see all the pros sporting the Bicycle Motocross Action stickers and patches.

BMX racing in the L.A. Coliseum, during the middle of the motorcross finals. Way to go ABA for getting BMX some exposure back then. Wonder if anyone has footage of this race?

Great shot of Eddy King at full speed during the DG/ABA Grand National.

Stu Thompson doing what he did best. Triple and he one the BMXA Nora Cup. BMX biggest legend!

Richie Anderson "The Avalanche." Often wonder how he got that nickname. Did he live in Colorado? Did he like hockey?

As the cover stated, a "1000 dollar custom cruiser." I was not expecting a beach cruiser. That is one fancy rig.

Bicycle Motocross Action -- May 1979

I will admit this to you right now, in 1979 I was nine years old and at the time I really had not much of a clue as to what BMX or even a bike was. If it wasn't Star Wars related I didn't want much to do with it. But judging by some of these photos, it looked like a really fun time. Astro Turf covered wedge jumps. What more could you ask for? Oh yeah, water traps in race tracks.

ABA Grand National coverage form Las Vegas. Cool thing about the earlier years of Bicycle Motocross Action is their coverage of races and the fact that they had novices in the pictures, not just Pros and Experts. The Novice class always had some of the most exciting racing anyway.

Two of the legends of BMX. Scott Clark and Stu Thompson. Read through some of the cations on this page. So classic. I like the one about "KOS not doing beans." BMX Action always had the best captions.

DG Products was not a company I was aware until I started looking back at some of these back issues of BMX Action. One thing is for sure, that DG California Pro is one sweet build. Does anyone have a build of one of those? Would like to see some pictures.

Jeff Bottema tearing through a berm and making the Rooster live up to it's name. Wonder who came up the the term "rooster." Is it just a play on a chicken ruffling it's feathers?  Not sure, but I love me some berm shots! BBBBBBBBRRRRRRRRAAAAAAAAAAA!!!!!!!!!!!!!

It is cool to look back and see the progress that bike riding has made. 1979 being the time when a one-footer was an amazing new jump. Hell, 2011 and we just saw someone do a triple back flip. BMX is come a long way, and I don't think there is anyway of it stopping now.

BMX Action--February 1983

I will be honest, there are a ton of these back issues of BMX Action that I missed growing up. This happens to be one that I wish I would have picked up at our local Albertson's. I absolutely love that cover shot of Clint Miller on his 2X4. Speed, style, great lean over one of the "flaming debris" at Magic Mountains

I have seen so many different shots from this jumping contest at the ABA's Lancaster race, this has to be one of the best of Jeff Kosmala blasting in the long distance jump. I am glad the boys holding the 9th Street Halloween Jams are still having these. Always one of the best things to watch.

From the looks of it, the Lancaster track had one of the best lay outs of the season. Would have loved to race that track, looks really fun and technical. And there you have Greg Hill winning in the Pro Cruiser Class again. Wonder if GT had a bonus clause in his contract for going after the cruiser number one title?

Mike Buff with a perfect table top during a BMX Action show at the Magic Mountain race between motos.

Advance kick turn trickery. I keep saying that coaster brakes need to make a come back. ACS would make a killing if they brought back that freewheel that had the lock out on it. Someone needs to make that happen.

Flatland legend Martin Aparijo getting his X-Up on. Must have been before he made the switch over to BMX Plus testing crew. I always forget how good of a jumper Martin was, always had a good style on jumps.

BMX Action--August 1983

This issue has to be one of those issues that stands out the most to me. And it all has to do with The Pit and a certain Hutch Pro Star test. You will see that in a minute.

Given their normally epic race coverage, it is a good thing to have a pictorial to cover a race every once on a while. Seeing as how good of a photographer Bob Osborn is, this is a welcome site.

Brent Paterson getting stylish over one of the double sets in the Pro Cruiser class.

Concrete jumps and berms must have been a must have for track in Florida. That and carpets on the top of jumps at the trails. Or is that everywhere now?

I know a lot of people have the "tuck" associated with Greg Hill, and I somewhat agree. But this picture of RL blasting one out of The Pit is by far one of the best ever captured. And still, to this day, on of my favorite tings to do on a bike.

Another great shot of Buff proving he has hops. And Toby Henderson sliding sideways "goin' wide open."

Pro gate starts always attracted a large crowd. Bid time speed of the line here. Damn! these shots make me want to go to the track .

(*update 9-4-2013* That is not Gary Ellis, It's Troy Daniels. Sorry.) This issue had a lot of great cruiser coverage. Does anyone know what forks Gary Ellis is running on his bike? Was it some kind of Kastan design dropout or a Kuwahara thing?

Mike Dominquez letting it fly over the Vans Plexi half pipe. What were they thinking not having decks on that thing?
