BMX Action--September 1983--Part 2

And here is part two of yesterday's post BMX Action september 1983.

Hahaha, we broke out so many spokes trying to do that rear tire slap. Buff and R.L. were always doing something cool.

So after R.L. switched out most of the bike to try and fit on the Mongoose expert, it was still way too small for him. It actually looks tiny under him in that photo.

NBL Bakersfield coverage and a Hank Williams reference, Good stuff! Stoked to see more of the cruiser class getting coverage. Bubba Hayes killing on hIs SE like he always seemed to be doing.

BMX Action--September 1983

Alright, it has been awhile since I have done one of these, and seeing as it is September, I thought the September 1983 issue of BMX Action would be a nice place to pick it back up. I had this issue from about the time in came in the mail, to the day it fell apart from being looked at so much. I rode with it in my back pocket over to my friends house, where we would pick over every detail. Even when were out riding, we would take a break and look through it again while sitting in the bottom of the ditch. One of my all time favorites for sure.

Another great first straight photo with Stu Thompson and Brian Patterson fighting for the lead into the first turn. Now if Stu wouldn't have blown out his back tire in the first turn, he probably would have held off Brian.

This photo is one of the all time best to come out of BMX Action. Scott Clark and R.L. Osborn buns up over a set of triples in Centennial Park. Nose down into the landed, best feeling ever!

Bicycle Motocross Action--September 1980

Great cover shot of Brent Patterson laying out the style for Bob Osborn's camera.

I never really knew what to think of these Moosegoose bikes. Quite the strange looking bike indeed.

The NBL St. Louis War Of The Stars had one Hell of a first jump, and this picture captures some of the problems people were having with it. Well, everyone but Stu that is. This might be the first issue that I noticed multiply Star Wars references.

This might be the second time I have posted that Brent Patterson bunnyhop photo. Such an epic photo. Now we know what issue it came from. Dig the panning in that Scott Ahart photo, "kicked into hyperdrive."

Toby Henderson doing the "Henderson." This might be the first time I have seen Toby Henderson rocking the Tuff Wheels. Does anyone know who that rider in the other shot?

This ACS Z-Rim test article and the photos that came along with it have become some of the most iconic BMX photos ever. Trash Can Morgan(Bob Morgan) letting is loose to test out the Z-Wheels.

BMX Action--March 1983

Another great Bob Osborn shot cover of BMX Action. Eddy King was always a fast racer and I seem to recall quite a few photos of him blasting some really good air off some jumps down in San Diego. A great racer and legend from this era.

The Oklahoma ABA Grands have always been a large spectacle of kids, BMX, parents, dirt, and just plan craziness. Look at the size of that crowd, I don't think these races have ever had a bad turn out.

Brian Patterson absolutely destroyed the competition at this race. He also claimed the number one title in the ABA that year. Good turn out for the Patterson boys. Brent picked up the NBL #1 in the cruiser class that year also.

That turn they had the pros do after the finish line must have been something to see. I wonder how many were sliding out trying to get to that roller into the next section? Bet it made for some good racing.

Eddy King blasting at his local trials. I think everyone at my school wanted a Diamond Back at the time. The black chrome frames were so nice. I think there is a picture of someone jumping of the Res tracks in New Braunfels on one. Wish I had a copy of that.

Oh those Mongoose Pro Class rims. What are those worth these days? Doing better than gold right? And what was with the BMX Action wrecking crew jumping over their trucks? I bet it was a contest to see who could get their truck in the magazine the most. Buff and RL destroyed a bunch of bikes like that.

Magazine Ads

Decided to post up a few adds from the issue of BMX Action in yesterday's post. There are some pretty good ones, and well, there are also some really bad ones that make you wonder if these add execs really could sleep at night.

"There is no defense." It might have been the coolest frame made at the time. But I doubt kids cared at all. A bike built like that was way too overpriced given the low price of a Diamond Back. The snake beat the scorpion big time. And the thing about that killer Shimano add is that those parts could have been made out of gold given the going prices for some of those parts these days. Crazy collectors.

Some smart ass at Mongoose thought this would be so clever. "230 ways to get goosed." Wonder how many sexual harassment suits they settled with that guys secretary?

Just when I thought Mongoose went and blew it with that last add, they go and do this. Killer picture with an otherwise lame white bar of warning. Looks like a Surgeon General's warning for a pack of smokes. This is still a pretty kick ass add.

Did SR hide enough of the Falcon to keep under Lucas Art's radar? Did George even know about this little rag called BMX Action? Doubt it. And when RL's dad was running the thing, of course no one told him to sit on it. If they did, there would be no add space for you.
